If one has to vote for the craziest industry today in India, Bollywood will win the election unanimously! Such has been the effect of film fraternity since forever. Be it the first superstar in Rajesh Khanna or the greatest actor country has produced in Dilip Kumar or the Angry Young Man or the three khans of today (well they have been around since 25 years!), all of them have garnered loads of love from the audience.
The “Competition” Within
The film industry, in totality, has won hearts all over the globe! But, as is with any other workplace, there is healthy competition inside fraternity as well. This “healthy” competition has kept the curators and performers always on toes to woe their audience with brilliant cinema. Baahubali 2: The Conclusion was testimony of the fact that Indian film industry has taken a leap forward, this year!
The fans, too, have been religious followers of their superstars and even though, they let go certain failures from their respective stars, but, they have always demanded to push the envelope from them. 11 successive 100 crore movies by Salman Khan is an example of ardent fan following. Even though, there have been some movies in the list which failed to impress the critics, his fans have been pushing him to perform better every year. Bajrangi Bhaijaan, Sultan, Ek Tha Tiger, Dabangg were all definitely actor’s best movies till date!
Not to forget Mr. Perfectionist who keeps on giving super hits every time he comes on the big screen. The love and affection from the audience is not the one way street though. They are very stringent in criticizing as well if the actor is not performing to the expectations. This is quite clear with the actor image of Shahrukh Khan. Although, the brand SRK is still ruling charts, but, as an actor, the quality of his movies has deteriorated over the years and public has been pretty expressive.
The good part is these superstars of today are aware of this and they don’t shy away from only doing one or two movies a year and concentrate on the content and the performance to take the Indian Cinema to next level.
The Evolution Of Content Based Cinema
To some extent! The efforts are visible. In last 4 years, where on one hand Khiladi Kumar has pioneered the art of delivering more than 3 content driven super-hits every year for ex.Toilet: Ek Prem Katha, Jolly LLB 2, Rustom, Holiday: A Soldier Is Never Off Duty etc., the cinematic experience of Baahubali 2: The Conclusion (as stated above), Dangal, Bajrangi Bhaijaan can’t be understated. All of this, have in fact, left us wanting more from this industry.
When everything is coming your way, you’re in the wrong lane.
Just like every coin has two sides, the competition has pushed the stars to propel in content based cinema, but, it is because of this “healthy” competition, our stars have also given us horrendous movies just because they wanted to be a part of the genre their counterparts have tried. Let’s see how the three khans have, coincidently, selected the genre already tried by the either one of them:
- Double Role: Aamir Khan started this trend with Dhoom 3 which was a major box-office hit. Double role genre was later tried by Salman Khan (Prem Ratan Dhan Payo) and Shahrukh Khan (Fan).
- Autistic Role: Even though, no one can beat Hrithik Roshan’s performance in Koi Mil Gaya, but the 3 khans, as well, have made their hands dirty in quick succession as if “Tune kiya to main bhi kar sakta hu!”. Aamir essayed one of the character in Dhoom 3, Shahrukh did the same in Fan while Salman tried his luck with Tubelight.
- Bank Chor: While we still wait for Shahrukh Khan to essay this role (if we take away Don franchise from his kitty as it doesn’t qualify in this genre), Aamir did the character in Dhoom 3 and Salman repeated the act in Kick.
- Godfather: No one can beat the Bhai in this one as he does that in real life. Launching and helping the budding talent. But, we have to wait to see Salman portraying this role in reel life. Shahrukh Khan, on the other hand, essayed the role of a shrink in Dear Zindagi where he helped Alia Bhatt to regain confidence and move forward in life. In the recently released, Secret Superstar, Aamir’s Shakti Kumaarr is what Salman does in real life!
Audience – The Real Winner
Audience is the real king of Bollywood as they are the ones who can make or break the given movie. Instead of ardent fan following, people select the movies at their own discretion. If the movie seems appealing they go and watch. Otherwise, you can put the three khans in the same movie and they won’t go! “Janta sab janti hai!” I am kidding, we will go!
